A geomagnetic (magnetic) storm is a temporary disturbance of Earth's magnetic field driven by charged particles from the Sun — solar flares and coronal mass ejections. Storm strength is measured by the Kp index on a 0–9 scale: the higher the value, the stronger the disturbance. Kp 5 and above corresponds to NOAA storm levels G1–G5.
Most people feel nothing. Weather-sensitive individuals — often older people or those with high blood pressure — may report headaches, fatigue, blood-pressure swings, and disrupted sleep, especially at Kp 5+. More on symptoms and what to do →
| Kp | Level | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 0–2 | — | Quiet. No effect on wellbeing. |
| 3 | — | Unsettled. Barely noticeable. |
| 4 | — | Active field. The most sensitive may feel it. |
| 5 | G1 | Minor storm. Possible headaches, fatigue. Aurora at high latitudes. |
| 6 | G2 | Moderate storm. Pressure swings in sensitive people. |
| 7 | G3 | Strong storm. Aurora visible at mid-latitudes. |
| 8 | G4 | Severe storm. Possible GPS and radio disruption. |
| 9 | G5 | Extreme storm. Aurora seen far toward the equator. |

Most people don't. If you're among the storm-sensitive, you usually notice. If not — lucky you.
